This professional iPad App consists of three modules: (i) a “Dry Eye Screening” - module for non-contact lens wearers, naïve-contact lens wearers and experienced lens wearers, of (ii) a “Dry Eye Management” - module to diagnose dry eye type and giving appropriate treatment recommendations and contact lens recommendations and (iii) of the “Symptometer” - module, consisting of one validated questionnaires for non-contact lens wearers and one for contact lens wearers.

This App leads the user easily through a practical and evidence based workflow. It includes low-tech tests as well as high-tech tests, the latter being optional. The at least required objective test can all be performed using a standard slit-lamp microscope, further optional test are the evaluation of tear film osmolarity or meibography.
The tests are comprehensively described in the online manual. Additionally by clicking on each test in the App a pictorial description of the test is popping up helping the user to analyse tear film and ocular signs and also to educate and involve the patient in the dry eye management process.
Likelihood of dry eye and dry eye type for the three patients groups (non-contact lens wearer; naïve-contact lens wearer and experienced contact lens wearer) will be calculated based on algorithms having been evaluated in our different research projects. The outcome of the observations is reported after tests are completed and appropriate treatment options are shown based on recent literature. In contact lens wearers any co-existing dry eye can be evaluated. Additionally to potential co-existing dry eye treatments evidence based options to improve contact lens wearing comfort are detailed stated, grouped by contact lens design, material, wearing modus and care.

The Symptometer can be used as a quick dry eye screening especially if a slit lamp microscope cannot be used. Such this may be of benefit in dispensing opticians. Additionally this can be used to observe treatment success based on patient’s symptoms.

This concept was tested in clinical practice over a period of almost one year. This feedback and feedback of additional 30 well known dry eye experts were included before final launch. Beside the benefit of a tool helping to diagnose dry eye and contact lens wearing discomfort with high sensitivity and specificity it was rated to be very easy to use, very patient friendly and time exposure being surprisingly short. The patients rated it feeling well looked after and they rated this dry eye management being very professional.
